Don’t think your individual food choices matter? Think again. The IMPACT Counter serves as a reminder that any concerned individual can have an enormous impact on animals and the environment by making more humane and sustainable food choices. And when a whole lot of people team up to shift their consumption patterns, the result can be immense.
The Counter calculates the estimated environmental and animal welfare impact of the sum total number of pledges and every time somebody new signs the pledge the counter adds their individual contribution to the totals. The numbers are rough estimates based on the most reliable figures available.
The number of animals spared from slaughter is based on a statistic in Jonathan Safran Foer’s new book, “Eating Animals,” that estimates that the average American consumes the equivalent of 21,000 animals in a lifetime. The figure is derived from USDA statistics.
The numbers for reduction in CO2 are from a study by geoscientists Gidon Eshel and Pamela Martin at the University of Chicago. They estimate that by switching to a vegetarian diet the average American would reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalence of 1.5 tons of CO2 per year.
The numbers for reduction in livestock waste are based on a graphic in the New York Times article “Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler” published in January, 2008. The graphic is based on research by David Pimentel at Cornell University and estimates that the average American is responsible for the production of 3 tons of livestock manure every year.
This table breaks down the impact of each individual pledge.

|15||172 pounds||345 pounds|
Go Veg for one meal a day in May
